Dessa två nyproducerade filmverk för enkelprojektion av den kanadensiskfödde konstnären Mark Lewis bosatt i Storbritannien, beställdes gemensamt av Film and Video Umbrella och Cornerhouse Gallery för grupputställningen Spectator Sport på Cornerhouse Gallery i Manchester den 11 maj – 23 juni 2002. Verken turnerar därefter oberoende till Rooseum i Malmö och till New Arts Centre i Salamanca i Spanien, där de kommer att installeras som separata projektioner.
Båda verken spelades in i april 2002 på super-35 mm film vid Heygate Estate, ett stort hyreshusområde i sydöstra London. Heygate Estate uppfördes under tidigt 1960-tal och står nu inför rivning.
Projektet har erhållit betydande stöd från Europeiska Unionens Kultur 2000-program.
Barns lekar (Heygate Estate) har formen av en oavbruten rörlig tagning, sju minuter och 21 sekunder lång, där kameran rör sig längs en gångväg ovan jord som löper tvärsigenom området. Slingrande mellan trapphus och trånga gathörn, tar kameran gångvägen i ett svep. Bilden domineras av höghusens modernistiska drag och rationellt planerade utrymmen, men i utkanten av synfältet sker triviala mänskliga aktiviteter. Barn av olika nationaliteter, avspeglande de kulturella variationerna i området, leker olika lekar. Cyklande, flygande med drake, allmänt tumlande runt eller fotbollsspelande fyller barnen den brutalistiska arkitekturens utkanter med livlig aktivitet. Delvis inspirerad av Breughels målning Childrens Games (Barnlekar) från 1560, kan Barns lekar (Heygate Estate) även ses som ett utforskande av den finske modernistiske arkitekten Aldo van Eyck berömda grundsats ”space in the image of man is place”.
Som kontrast är verkets tvilling, Hyreshusets bakgård (Haygate Estate), en noggrant komponerad statisk tagning på fyra minuter skildrande en tillfällig fotbollsmatch med områdets barn på en bit allmän mark övervakad av hyreshusens hotfulla skuggor. Liksom i Barns lekar (Heygate Estate), är de små detaljerna betydelsefulla: en skog av grafitti-tags dekorerar en lång, låg mur; ett tält ockuperar en mystisk plats på den provisoriska fotbollsplanen; kläder som hängts på tork ger liv åt hyreshusens enfärgade exteriör och en madrass företar en tillsynes självständig resa längs med husens balkonger. Inspirerad i lika hög grad av den misslyckade arkitektoniska utopin i Heygate Estate, som av barnens påhittighet, återkallar Hyreshusets bakgård (Heygate Estate) även verk av den romantiske 1800-talsmålaren Adolph Menzel.
